Elevated Reliefs

Elevated Reliefs is a wall sculpture created during Van Kelle’s Artist in Residency at the Ottawa School of Art (OSA) in Ottawa, Canada. Van Kelle spent  three months in the autumn of 2018 in the studio to expand his technique.

Elevated Reliefs is the result of a three month research in the qualities of acrylic and oil paint. Van Kelle’s main goal during his residency at the OSA was to take the opportunity to start from scratch and conceptualise how the materials could be used. In using different mediums and layers, and adding and scratching the paint, Van Kelle creates the illusion of depth in his work. This illusion is strengthened by the distance put between the wall and the sculptures. In doing so, Van Kelle compliments his desire to approach paintings as spatial objects.
