In his life Wouter van Kelle is seeking out a balance. Balancing different aspects of his life, where desire and reality are seldom unilateral. He feeds this search by drawing inspiration from the places he visits, mainly the vastness and power that nature represents to him.  The sum of these two has shaped a fascination for the way different materials, shapes and colours react to one another. Through which he creates a delicate balance between pulling and pushing, between overwhelming and intriguing.Over the years his work has developed as a result of extensive research done into the different qualities of the materials he uses. Fascinated by how certain paints react to different surfaces and by how to work them to do what he wants them to do. Often pushing the boundaries of what the materials can do and consciously seeking surprising results. In addition to this research Wouter develops a process of actions. He repeats movements by trial and error until the desired results are achieved, while thoroughly keeping track of what he does. Throughout the process Wouter always seeks to find a balance in colour, shape and composition.


Wouter van Kelle (1992) graduated in 2016 from the Willem de Kooningacademy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands majoring in Fine Arts &#38;amp; Design in Education.  Having done his exchange (2015) in Fine Art at the UNSW Art &#38;amp; Design, Sydney, Australia, Wouter went on to build his career as a visual artist focussing on creating paintings and spatial objects, and as of recent also drawings

OCULUS is designed to be part of a serie of exhibitions at projectspace Foundation Mesh, interpreting the concept of a Show Box.
Approaching the gallery space as a playground was Van Kelle’s intention when creating ‘Oculus’. A space where everything is possible. With this in mind he created a painting which would be visually attractive from both inside and out. With this work Van Kelle wants to show the viewer how his work is constructed by leaving the inside open to view. The size of the work facilitates to wander around to be able to perceive all sides of the installation. 

‘Oculus’ is a work in which Van Kelle has started to use a broader colour pallet, stepping away from his monotone use of colour which can be seen in previous works. Also, the use of materials is broaden during the research, adding pigment powder to the process of painting for the first time. This makes the paintings more vibrant and creates more layers on the surface.

	Illuminated Fields
	

ILLUMINATED FIELDS is the sequel to Van Kelle’s graduation work. In this work he elaborates on the topics he came across during his graduation work. This mean further stretching the concept of paintings, but also involving new techniques and materials.


Illuminated Fields is a serie in which both the desire to expose the different layers of paint and to approach painting as spatial objects takes a central position. &#38;nbsp;This desire has evolved into a installation with an ever growing number of cubes and cube related shapes. The combination of material and light exposes the many layers of paint applied to the paper. This makes for a new experience for the viewer and allows him to dwell away in the painting. At the same time the objects appear as solid forms, where they are in fact very fragile and need to be taken care of with caution.

	Elevated Reliefs
	

Elevated Reliefs is a wall sculpture created during Van Kelle’s Artist in Residency at the Ottawa School of Art (OSA) in Ottawa, Canada. Van Kelle spent &#38;nbsp;three months in the autumn of 2018 in the studio to expand his technique.


Elevated Reliefs is the result of a three month research in the qualities of acrylic and oil paint. Van Kelle’s main goal during his residency at the OSA was to take the opportunity to start from scratch and conceptualise how the materials could be used. In using different mediums and layers, and adding and scratching the paint, Van Kelle creates the illusion of depth in his work. This illusion is strengthened by the distance put between the wall and the sculptures. In doing so, Van Kelle compliments his desire to approach paintings as spatial objects.

	Danse des Étourneaux
	

Danse des Étourneaux is a still ongoing project which currently encompasses a series of drawings, but which is bound to move into different materials later in 2022/2023.&#38;nbsp; Van Kelle is researching movement and new materials in this captivating project. Drawings can be purchased through the shop or email.
Danse des Étourneaux is a visual translation of vivid memories he has of a natural phenomena that happens every winter in Van Kelle’s maternal country of the Netherlands. Roughly from September until as late as March giant flocks of starling congregate in the hundreds of thousands to perform a spectacle known as murmuration. These small birds present a seemingly choreographed dance of pulling and pushing, which Van Kelle is researching in his own visual ways. DDE was born out of memory and being away from his country of birth, and is pushing him into mediums he hasn’t used before.

	Haukijärven Metsä
	The drawings show different traces of lichen, tiny symbiotic creatures who can be found in plenty in forests. Lichen can live almost anywhere, and can be an indication for the health of the forest. Lichen have been around for an astonishing long time, they play a vital part in our environment, and the history of the world.&#38;nbsp;The work speaks about these soft beings and tells their story, and that of the forests. It speaks of its past, and it speaks of the nurturing care both supply.
During his residency at Arteles Creative Center, Wouter submerged himself fully in the forest, paying attention to the smallest details and grandest gestures she has to offer. The series of drawings he made are annotations of the memories and beings from the forests around the residency. On the last day of the residency Wouter spent his day letting go of the process, research and sketches by slowly burning them. In only keeping the final 50 drawings of the series he wanted to put the emphasis on the time and space in which the work is created, which is why Haukijärven Metsä (the forest of Haukijärven) became the name of the series.

Untitled Series of Creation (USoC) are a series of paintings with which Wouter is graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy.

The key concept behind USoC is investigating the act of painting in its basic elements. The creation of this work was a necessity for Wouter. It allowed him to fully focus on the creation, and let him dissolve in a world where the ‘what, why and how’ questions don’t matter. USoC are a serie of several works on paper and panel mesuring up to 1.50 x 2.30 metres.
